Not only that, but river fires were quite common on rivers in the industrial midwest during the first half of the 20th century. The picture that Time ran in 1969 was actually from 1952.

I remember that the later editions of the book changed "Lake Erie" to something else ("quite dreary"?)

I didn’t know that, that’s F’ed up. Again, not raging on Cleveland. One of my favorite hikes in Maine took us to an old logging operation, back when you could abandon an industrial operation on a waterway with no consequences

Holy shit. England leaving the EU?! Goes to show. We here in the US need to take this next election seriously and not assume that Clinton will waltz to victory

just saw that. Yikes. 2016 comes not just for famous musicians, but for us all

Cavs win NBA finals; Ceasefire with FARC in Colombia; UK leaves EU. Clearly these are the End Times

jazz folks, gut reactions—I’m planning on organizing my jazz unit around the 1958 Great Day in Harlem photo.

gut reaction: cool idea, but sounds suspiciously like a Ken Burns/Wynton Marsalis project. There’s a really great doc film about that photo, though

why isn’t Coltrane in the photo? he was on the scene by then.
User avatar
nickj - Sun Jun 26, 2016 12:56 pm
as I remember, the story is that the photographer put the word out on the scene that musicians should just show up at that address in Harlem
User avatar
nickj - Sun Jun 26, 2016 12:56 pm
and was shocked that so many actually showed up

according to the sessionography, Miles’ sextet was in NYC on the day of the photo, but none of them are there

so we know roughly where he was (right there!) but not why he wasn’t there

this might be one of those intersting research wormholes that doesn’t get closed until next semester when I’m done prepping. All Hail Librarians :joecool:

the doc’s on the bill for this weekend! and the morning explanation doesn’t satisfy. From what I know of Miles’s character, there’s no way he should have passed on a chance to associated himself with greatness. Plus everyone else showed up that morning!

The list for 2016 keeps growing. We lost Scotty Moore and Mack )Mustang Sally) Rice yesterday. Another great song that he wrote was covered by The Staple Sisters-"Respect Yourself."

do you all know the concept of the long nineteenth century? the idea that, because of the French Revolution and WWI, the 19th century as a historical era runs from ca. 1789 to 1914

well, the long 20th century ends in 2016 (which isn’t half done yet!). It’s frightening to live through history, but it’s worse when there’s an epochal feeling in the air
