I see a spaceman rescuing a slobber-covered babe from the jaws of a giant fish

re Pet Sounds: I think it’s got amazing songs, amazing arrangements, amazing production, and came out at the exact right moment in history. not my favorite album ever by a long shot, but I get the cult mentality around it

I see it as a still from the never-made 1956 version of "Alien": a crewman is helping Ripley emerge from suspended animation.

That, or she’s an orbital hotel housekeeper helping a guest prep his unit. Space is the Place!

Appreciate the feedback on PS. I think I just don’t really like the BBs that much. Maybe I’d have a different view if I grew up listening to it. Every time I listen to it, I think, okay *this* time it’ll make sense, but that moment never comes.

I’m not a BB fan at all and def didn’t grow up listening to it. Every couple years I circle back to it and give it a listen and, I dunno, I guess I just hear and appreciate everything that separates it from other pop music of its era.

I’ve never listened to any other BB album all the way through, though, and have no desire to dig deeper into their catalog tbh

but jeez, now I want to listen to Pet Sounds  God Only Knows, I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times... that’s some next-level stuff for 1966

Same here, re: I’ve never listened to any other BB album all the way through. My wife loves PS; fortunately I’ve come to like it, too.

R.I.P John Prine: He wrote some of the saddest songs i ever heard, did it well too

The 1966-71 era for the Beach Boys is definitely worth listening to. "Sunflower" in particular is an excellent record and probably their best after PS.

And yes, R.I.P. to the great John Prine. This is a big one.

I’m not a huge BB fan either, but Smile is a great album

his first album is one of my favorite collections of songs: Angel from Montgomery, Flashback Blues, Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore, Paradise, Pretty Good? damn

Pet Sounds is unrelentingly boring. There, I said it.

And all of the production studio nonsense just makes it worse, imo.

I mean, I get that it was influential in its day and must have sounded like this amazing leap forward at the time, but to me it still sounds kind of hokey the way a lot of music from the early in mid-60s does.

Even with a lot of Spector-esque mumbo-jumbo piled on top of it. Sgt. Pepper’s, in contrast, has had remarkable staying power. Sounds fresh and original to this day.

Whaaat? You don’t like the literal pet sounds? Brent was giving props to Brian every time he made idiotic bird noises during Bird Song

I’m not enough of a fan to run to the defense of Pet Sounds, but I think hearing the isolated vocal tracks helped me appreciate the whole thing more. https://youtu.be/FPN53PHDwe4

I will grant you that it’s one of the dumbest album covers ever, however :ike:

Brian Wilson’s vocal arrangements are masterpieces! also "Good Vibrations" is one of the best songs of the 60s. I agree wholeheartedly with the "sounding dated " though

Zimbabwean music has been Just Exactly Perfect for me lately :cloud9: :listen: my Thomas Mapfumo biography came in the mail and I’m digging this: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0HgZ5g ... pCGfmWGkdQ :chewie:

Not here to trash the Beach Boys in general, just the idea of Pet Sounds as a masterpiece. Good Vibrations was a single, right? Not on PS anyway.
