got to celebrate my first Canadian Thanksgiving with some friends today... I was tempted to bring the new 6/22/73 along for the meal, but they were more into Bryan Adams and Drake :vulcan:

speaking of music and national identity, there’s a new music group comprised of refugees (several Burmese, an Indian, some Iraqis, and some Thai folks). We’re singing "traditional songs from your culture."

As the only American, I’ve been torturing myself with what to pick: "Amazing Grace"? A Stephen Foster song?

I’m really tempted to pick GDTRFB. The Dead version has a lot of lyrical repetition (a plus for a group of folks who have English as a second or third language), and the Guthrie version’s pretty political. Plus what’s more traditional than a song about the working class getting f**ked?

That’s a good pick

good question! As much as I’d love to hear this little UN sing "Pocahontas" I fear too much of the lyrics would be lost in translation

I vote for either Clementine (traditional version) or Oh, Susanna. Unless your heart is set on ol’ Jimmie, in which case you need to go with Pistol Packin’ Papa

today’s Banerjee’s birthday. Because it’s been raining all bloody day, it’s a good excuse to listen to one of my favorites, his 1984 performance of monsoon Raga Surdasi Malhar

Agreed. the 1st set isn’t bad, either! that show is a sentimental favorite of mine. I’ve never dug into the rest of that Meadowlands run, though...
